College of Arts PhD Student Co – Curates New York Exhibition
Sarah Lightman, a PhD student at the University of Glasgow who is exploring the use of autobiography in comics, is currently co-curating the exhibition Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women, on display at the Yeshiva University Museum in New York from September 25, 2011 to April 8, 2012.
Graphic Details is a ground breaking exhibition, providing the first in-depth look at a unique and prolific niche of ground breaking story telling by Jewish Women in autobiographical comics. This exhibition of original drawings, full comic books and graphic novels, presents eighteen artists whose intimate, confessional work has influenced the world of comics over the last four decades.
As part of the exhibition, Sarah is also organizing a one-day symposium exploring the intersections between Jewishness and gender in comics and graphic narratives.
This exhibition follows Sarah’s earlier event, Women in Comics, a cross-institutional conference which received financial support from the College of Arts Graduate School. The Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr Dee Heddon said “I have been impressed with Sarah’s ambition and skill at creating international events rooted in her postgraduate research. I am pleased that the Graduate School has been able to provide support to Sarah as she realises her plans. This exhibition offers an excellent opportunity for Sarah to apply her skills and knowledge in an international context and to engage the public in a fascinating topic.”
Sarah was attracted to study at the University Glasgow because of its reputation for text and image research: “I think that we can seriously say that the University of Glasgow is the number one place in the world to study the history of the comic strip, taking into account everything from our modern day interpretations, right back to the Renaissance.”
